June is National Safety Month, and it is a good reminder to think of the ones we love and how best to protect them, especially children. As we start the summer months, there are plenty of opportunities for family fun! However, it is an excellent time to be mindful of preventative child safety measures. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), injury is still the leading cause of death for children and teens. The CDC’s Childhood Injury Report from 2008 discovered “on average, 12,175 children 0 to 19 years of age died each year in the United States from an unintentional injury.”

While unintentional injuries are a cause for concern, there are ways to prevent them. The CDC provides helpful information on child safety and injury prevention so parents, guardians and caretakers can help keep their families safe. The CDC has more information on the following safety topics:

  • Burn Prevention
  • Drowning Prevention
  • Fall Prevention
  • Playground Safety
  • Poisoning Prevention
  • Road Traffic Safety
  • Sports Safety

Help keep your children safe and healthy by scheduling an appointment with their pediatrician at least once a year.
